Summer evenings in Sidmouth have a distinct charm, especially when the July air is warm and the sea breeze is gentle. After a long day building sandcastles on the beach or exploring the dramatic cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, the prospect of heading out for dinner should be exciting, not a logistical headache. The last thing anyone wants to do on their holiday is argue over who has to be the designated driver, or spend ages trying to coordinate local taxis for a family of six.
Leaving the Car Behind
This is exactly why the location of Sea-Renity is such a benefit for our guests. One of the most practical features of the house is our guaranteed off-street parking for two cars. Once you arrive, you can simply park up on the private driveway, drop your keys on the side, and genuinely forget about driving for the rest of your stay.
Because our holiday home is situated in a quiet, peaceful cul-de-sac just behind the high street, heading out for the evening is completely stress-free. It is a flat, easy six-minute walk to the seafront and the bustling centre of town. You can even pop out through the back gate in our enclosed garden, which leads to a handy passage that brings you even closer to the local shops and restaurants. The whole family, from young children to grandparents, can wander into town together at a leisurely pace, soaking up the relaxed regency atmosphere of Sidmouth.
A Seafood Feast at Mycas
Just recently, we took this exact stroll into the town centre for a family meal at Mycas, a fantastic seafood restaurant that we always love to visit. There is something truly special about walking straight from your front door to a superb dining experience in mere minutes. When we arrived, we were seated at a lovely rustic wooden table that soon became the stage for a vibrant, close-up spread of the freshest seafood.
The menu choices were mouth-watering, and the food itself was simply spectacular. I opted for a generous bowl of fresh mussels, which were steamed to perfection and served in a rich, fragrant broth that demanded to be soaked up with fresh bread. The other guests at my table chose the prawn and crab linguine. It was a beautifully vibrant dish, packed with flavour and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. My husband decided on the prawn and scallop skewers, which were cooked beautifully and presented with real care.
Of course, no seaside meal is complete without a side of chips, and I must give a very special mention to the ones at Mycas. They were absolutely amazing—wonderfully crispy on the outside and perfectly fluffy on the inside, the ideal accompaniment to our seafood feast.
The Perfect End to a Coastal Day
After such a satisfying and indulgent meal, the short, level stroll back to Sea-Renity was the perfect way to let our dinner settle. There was no waiting around for a cab or navigating dark country lanes. Within minutes, we were back in our tucked-away home from home, ready to relax in the cosy lounge or enjoy a final evening drink in the garden.
