Late May is a brilliant time to be in Devon, and there is no better way to kick off the summer season than with a trip to the Devon County Show. We popped along on the 22nd of May, and it was an absolute cracker of a day out. If you have not been before, it is a massive, vibrant celebration of everything that makes our wonderful county tick, bringing together magnificent agriculture, local crafts, and some truly spectacular food and drink.
Wandering around the showground, you get a true feel for the heart of the West Country. We spent a good chunk of our time admiring the prize-winning cattle and sheep, which is always a treat for all ages. There is something wonderfully traditional about seeing the farming community proudly showing off their animals, alongside the impressive displays of vintage tractors and thrilling showjumping events in the main arena.
Of course, it is not just about the farming heritage. The sheer scale of the local food and drink marquees is staggering. We simply could not resist sampling some proper Devonshire fudge, tasting a drop of local cider, and picking up a few artisan cheeses to bring back for supper. It is a fantastic place to grab some top-notch local provisions if you fancy cooking up a feast during your holiday.

The showground at Westpoint is just a straightforward drive from Sidmouth, making Sea-Renity a brilliant base if you are planning to attend next year, or indeed if you are visiting any of the fantastic agricultural shows in the region. After spending hours on your feet exploring the massive site, knowing you have a comfortable, peaceful retreat to return to makes all the difference. Arriving back in Sidmouth, the absolute joy of having our own off-street parking for two cars right on the driveway cannot be overstated. We pulled straight up, kicked off our walking shoes in the utility room, and immediately popped the kettle on. Our bright, open-plan kitchen is brilliant for unpacking all the local goodies you inevitably pick up at the show. We spent the early evening gathered around the large central island, slicing up our newly acquired local cheeses, before throwing open the double doors to head out into the garden.
Because our enclosed rear garden is a proper little sun trap, it is the ideal spot to catch the last of the evening sunshine with a well-earned drink in hand. Later on, we took a gentle six-minute level stroll down to the seafront to watch the waves, before heading back to the cosy lounge to put our feet up in front of the television.
