A Summer Evening at Heron Farm

Summer in East Devon is truly something special. With the long, light evenings stretching out before us, it is the perfect excuse to explore a little further afield and sample some of the fantastic local produce we are so lucky to have on our doorstep. While our guests absolutely love being just a six-minute level walk from Sidmouth’s beautiful seafront, it is always nice to have a few recommendations for a brilliant evening out nearby. Recently, I decided to take a short trip just up the road to Honiton to experience one of the woodfired evenings at Heron Farm, and I simply had to share the experience with you.

Heron Farm is a wonderful working vineyard and cafe set in the beautiful rolling Devon countryside. While Sidmouth has an abundance of brilliant pubs and restaurants right on the doorstep of Sea-Renity, sometimes it is lovely to mix things up with a countryside excursion. The drive itself is a pleasant journey through leafy lanes, and upon arrival, the atmosphere at their woodfired events is wonderfully relaxed and welcoming. Picture sitting out on a warm summer evening, in their fabulous sunken garden, with the unmistakable, mouth-watering scent of woodsmoke drifting through the air. It is a wonderfully peaceful spot to unwind after a busy day on the beach or walking the coastal paths of the Jurassic Coast.

Fantastic Food and Local Wine

The star of the show during these special events is, without a doubt, the food. Their woodfired evenings are all about relaxed, sociable dining that brings people together. It is food done exceptionally well, full of flavour and character.

Naturally, being at a vineyard, it would have been a missed opportunity not to sample a glass or two of their own wine. Heron Farm produces some incredibly lovely, crisp wines, which pair beautifully with the smoky flavours of the woodfired menu. Sitting back with a chilled glass of local wine, chatting as the sun dipped lower in the sky, was an absolute treat.

If you are staying with us at Sea-Renity, getting to Heron Farm is an absolute breeze. It is only about nine miles north of Sidmouth, making it a very easy drive. Alternatively, you can easily book a local taxi if you fancy indulging in the wine list without worrying about the journey back. It makes for a brilliant evening out for couples looking for a romantic setting, or families wanting a laid-back dinner in the fresh air where everyone can just relax and enjoy themselves.

After a thoroughly enjoyable evening of great food and lovely wine, it was a joy to head back to the coast. Pulling onto the private driveway at Sea-Renity, knowing you do not have to hunt for a parking space, is always a welcome relief. Returning to our quiet residential road, kicking off my shoes, and relaxing in our cosy, comfortable lounge was the perfect end to the night. If you are planning a summer seaside break and fancy experiencing the best of both the Devon coast and our wonderful local countryside, we would absolutely love to host you.
